SALTON CITY / DESERT SHORES, Imperial County — October 27, 2026. Amid the debate over much larger environmental investments at the Salton Sea, one relatively modest public project has reached a measurable milestone. Imperial County announced that the Desert Shores Soccer Park Phase II Urban Greening Project was completed, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony held July 10, 2026.
What the county says the project delivered
The county’s July 14 announcement identifies a $250,000 investment associated with creation and improvement of about 25,557 square feet of green space at Desert Shores Community Park. That footprint is roughly 0.59 acres, but the county does not claim the space constitutes the entire park or a replacement for Salton Sea habitat restoration.
The county names the Salton Community Services District and the Imperial County Air Pollution Control District as partners. County Supervisor Ryan Kelley attended the ceremony, alongside local residents and agency representatives. County officials describe the completed work as part of urban greening and community recreation efforts.
Why this matters in Desert Shores
Communities on the Sea’s western side need everyday public facilities as well as long-term environmental projects. A nearby park gives families a place to gather and provides a visible example of a funded improvement. It does not establish that the area’s ambient air pollution has fallen by a measured amount, or that recession of the Sea has been reversed.
The county describes urban greening as a way to support carbon sequestration and community health. Evaluating those potential benefits would require ongoing maintenance details, vegetation survival records, water-use information and environmental monitoring beyond a ribbon-cutting announcement.
Funding and maintenance questions
Residents may reasonably ask how the $250,000 was broken down among construction, landscaping, irrigation and related work; who maintains the improvements; and whether upkeep is fully funded. California58 has not reviewed the construction invoices or conducted an on-site inspection. We therefore use the county’s reported completion date and scope rather than asserting independently verified performance.
